The Iraqi Football Association announced the start of the Iraqi Premier League for the first time officially in 1974, with the participation of 20 teams in the league on a seasonal basis. Since the start of the Iraqi Premier League, more than 80 iraqi clubs have participated in the competition due to the relegation of some clubs and the rise of others in each season.

Al-Zawraa
Al-Zawraa club is considered the most successful team ever in the Iraqi Premier League, as they managed to achieve the title on 14 occasions, a record no other Iraqi club reached in the league, despite being runner-up 7 times. Al-Zawraa club’s first title came in 1975-1976 season, and the succeeded in preserving its title in the following season to win its second title. Before the end of the decade, Al-Zawraa returned to win their third title in 1978-1979.
The 1980s witnessed a complete absence of Al-Zawraa from the podiums in the Iraqi Premier League, but they returned with great force in the ninties, where it managed to win 5 titles starting from 1990-1991, before achieving three consecutive titles in 1993-1994, 1994-1995 and 1995-1996 seasons. They returned again and claimed three more consecutive titles in 1998-1999, 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 seasons to reach their 10th title.
Al-Zawraa Club was back in 2005-2006 season to achieve its eleventh title in the competiton, then missed for 5 consecutive seasons from the podiums, to return in 2010-2011 to crown the 12th title. The 13th title in the history of Al-Zawraa club in the Iraqi Premier League came in the 2015-2016 season, before the team crowned their last title in 2017-2018, raising the tally to 14 titles.
Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya
Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya Club is the second most successful Iraqi Club at the level of local competitions in general and the Iraqi Premier League in particular. The ancient Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya club succeeded in achieving the Iraqi Premier League title on 7 occasions and runner-up 13 times. This club is also the first champion in the history of the Iraqi League, as it succeeded in achieving the first title in 1974-1975 season, in which the Iraqi Premier League was launched for the first time.
Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya club was absent from the podiums for 15 years after claiming their first title, before returning in the early 1990s to claim their second title in 1989-1990. Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya returned to achieve the third title in 1991-1992 and the fourth in 1996-199, ending the previuos millennium with 4 titles.
In the modern millennium, Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya club succeeded adding three more titles to its account in the Iraqi League. The first of those titles came in 2004-2005 season, before the team returned after 12 years to claim their 6th title in 2016-2017. The last titles for Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya came in the season 2020-2021 to raise their balance to 7 Iraqi Premier League titles.
Al-Talaba
Al-Talaba Club is considered one of the most important Iraqi clubs of all time because of their permanent presence among the leagung centers, despite not achieving many titles during the past two decades. Al-Talaba succeeded in achieving the Iraqi Premier League title on 5 occasions, and it also occupied the runner-up position on 6 other occasions.
